On November 20, 2025, Wang Chengjie, Vice-Chairman & Secretary-General of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (“CIETAC”), led a delegation to hold a discussion in Vancouver with JJ McIntyre, Chairman of the Vancouver Maritime Arbitrators Association ("VMAA") & CIETAC Arbitrator, and other representatives. The participants conducted in-depth exchanges on issues such as deepening bilateral cooperation, promoting mutual learning of arbitration practices between China and Canada, and strengthening international arbitration talent training.

 

 

Wang Chengjie,Vice-Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC, stated that CIETAC and the VMAA have maintained friendly exchanges for a long time. The two parties signed a cooperation agreement in 2012. In 2019, a VMAA delegation visited CIETAC and conducted in-depth discussions on issues such as the connection of China-Canada dispute resolution mechanisms and the deepening of multilateral cooperation, laying a solid foundation for the continuous expansion of bilateral cooperation. Since 2021, the two institutions have jointly organized the "Sino-Canada International Arbitration Hotspot Seminar " during China Arbitration Week for consecutive years, which has attracted extensive attention and achieved positive exchange results.

He pointed out that CIETAC has always been committed to strengthening international arbitration cooperation. Together with global dispute resolution institutions, it promotes the exchange of arbitration legal systems, demonstrates the advantages of the arbitration system, and enhances the international influence of the arbitration system. In the future, the two parties can deepen collaboration in areas such as rule research, procedure optimization, sharing of typical cases, training of young talents, and moot arbitration competitions, working together to contribute more practical achievements to the development of China-Canada international commercial dispute resolution.

JJ McIntyre, Chairman of VMAA, stated that in recent years, VMAA and CIETAC have laid a solid foundation for co-hosting seminars and promoting professional exchanges, which has effectively enhanced understanding and deepened mutual trust between the two countries' arbitration communities.VMAA looks forward to deepening cooperation with CIETAC in fields such as international commercial arbitration, particularly creating more practical outcomes in areas including young arbitrator training and bilateral exchanges, to further promote the coordinated development of the two countries' arbitration ecosystems.

Both parties expressed their unanimous commitment to taking this discussion as an opportunity to strengthen institutionalized cooperation, and to make new contributions to advancing the common prosperity of the China-Canada arbitration communities and enhancing the capacity of international arbitration services.
