On February 20, 2025, a delegation from the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), led by Lu Fei, Director of the Business Development Division, and Liang Zile, Case Manager of the International Cases Division, visited the Tokyo headquarter of the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA) and the Tokyo office of Anderson Mori & Tomotsune (AMT Law Firm) to engage in exchanges and discussions with experts from Japan’s dispute resolution community.

At AMT Law Firm, the CIETAC delegation exchanged views with Hiroshi Nakagawa, Partner of ATM Law Firm and CIETAC arbitrator, and Aoi Inoue, Head of the dispute resolution team of ATM Law Firm, on the differences between arbitration and litigation procedures in China and Japan, the impact of Eastern and Western legal cultures on the operation of arbitration and mediation mechanisms, and the role of lawyers in arbitration procedures. During the discussion, Mr. Inoue also shared his experiences of handling cases at CIETAC’s Shanghai Sub-commission, expressing his satisfaction with the CIETAC’s arbitration process and his appreciation and confidence in CIETAC’s professional services.

At the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA), Tomoyoshi Miyasaka, Secretary-General of JCAA, and Shinji Ogawa, Manager of the Arbitration and Mediation Department, warmly welcomed the CIETAC delegation. Both sides reviewed the long-standing cooperation between the two institutions, introduced their respective developments in recent years, discussed the differences and similarities between the arbitration and legal systems and practices of China and Japan, and expressed a shared desire to strengthen cooperation and promote wider application of arbitration on the existing foundation.

These exchanges between the CIETAC delegation and Japan’s arbitration practitioner community not only deepened mutual understanding and learning of each other’s rules and practices, but also laid a solid foundation for further cooperation and interaction between the legal and arbitration communities of the two countries in the future.
