From October 19-22, the 2024 AIPPI World Congress was held in Hangzhou. The Congress was co-organized by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (“CCPIT”) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (“AIPPI”), and was co-undertaken by Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government and AIPPI China, with the theme of “Balanced Protection of Intellectual Property Rights and Innovative Development” . President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the conference, fully reflecting the great importance China attaches to intellectual property work, which has triggered a warm response from people from all walks of life in China and abroad. This is the first time in 127 years since the establishment of AIPPI that the World Intellectual Property Congress has been held in China. About 2,300 intellectual property professionals from 92 countries and regions attended the Congress, with more than 1,500 participants from outside China, which is a record high in terms of the number of participants by country and region. China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (“CIETAC”) sent Wei Honggui, Assistant Secretary General of CIETAC Zhejiang Sub-commission, and Zhang Sisi, Head of International Cooperation Affairs of CIETAC Shanghai Sub-commission, to participate in the conference and the exhibition promotion.

Since its establishment, CCPIT has always taken serving Chinese and foreign enterprises as its foundation. It actively explores and innovates in the fields of international economic and trade arbitration, intellectual property services, commercial mediation, etc., creating an all-chain, one-stop, internationalized commercial legal service system. As an important pioneer, promoter and builder of China’s intellectual property cause, CCPIT vigorously promotes the high-quality development of intellectual property service industry, contributes to the construction of a strong intellectual property country and promotes international cooperation in intellectual property.
As one of the most important commercial legal service organizations of CCPIT, CIETAC, together with CCPIT Patent and Trademark Law Office and Commercial Legal Service Center , jointly set up the exhibition to promote to the delegates the commercial legal services of CCPIT, including CIETAC commercial arbitration and domain name dispute resolution services, CCPIT mediation services, and intellectual property rights agency services such as patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights services.

During the participation and exhibition, CIETAC representatives had extensive and fruitful exchanges with industry insiders from intellectual property registration and management organizations, patent and trademark agents, lawyers, scholars, and so on.

CIETAC has always attached great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights and dispute resolution and has heard a large number of arbitration cases involving intellectual property rights. According to incomplete statistics, nearly 15% of CIETAC’s arbitration cases involve intellectual property rights; CIETAC is authorized by ICANN and CNNIC to provide domain name dispute resolution services for Chinese and foreign parties in respect of generic top-level domain names (gTLDs) and China’s ccTLDs and has handled more than 4,000 domain name cases in the past 20 years. In the past 20 years, it has handled more than 4,000 domain name cases involving parties from more than 20 countries and regions. Nearly 300 Chinese and foreign arbitrators on the CIETAC’s roster have intellectual property expertise and practical experience, and mediators with intellectual property expertise account for about 25% of the total number of mediators on the CIETAC’s panel of arbitrators. CIETAC also established the IP Arbitration Center in 2022, organizes the IP Dispute Resolution Forum, and publishes the Annual Report on International IP Rights Arbitration in China every year. By giving full play to its advantages in experience, teamwork, and internationalization, CIETAC has been actively promoting the construction and improvement of the multi-disputes resolution mechanism for IPR, and providing high-quality and efficient IPR dispute resolution services for Chinese and foreign parties.
