On the afternoon of 2 December 2019, the lecture on English Legal Profession & Cross Examination organized by CIETAC was successfully held in Beijing. More than 80 arbitrators, lawyers, scholars and legal professionals attended the seminar. The lecture was delivered by Cecilia Xu Lindsey, barrister of 9 Stone Buildings Barristers' Chambers, who is the first Chinese woman being qualified as a barrister in England and Wales. Li hu, Deputy Secretary General of CIETAC, hosted and addressed the seminar.
Barrister Xu has practiced in England for years, and possesses rich trial experience. In comparison with Chinese Law, she explained the English lawyer system, the difference between barristers and solicitors and the scope of their work in a simple and vivid way in Chinese. She also illustrated the procedure of trial, the methods and techniques of cross examinations, and shared her thoughts on case analysis and choice of strategy as a barrister.
In the lecture, Xu gave abundant examples and clear explanation, which make the complicated issues in practice easily understood by the audience. . During the Q&A session, Xu answered questions on the preparation of expert witness and cross examination techniques, and interacted with the participants.
Arbitrators and lawyers at sub-commissions of CIETAC also heard the lecture through the synchronous broadcasting.
Before the Seminar , Deputy Secretary General Li hu had a short meeting with Xu. Li briefed about the recent development of Chinese arbitration industry and the CIETAC. They also exchanged views on the style of trial in the eastern and the western international arbitration, and discussed about certain issues arising from the practice. They reached consensus on further exchanges of practices.
