On the afternoon of 21 November 2024, Gu Yan, Vice President of the Arbitration Court of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) led a delegation to visit the Association of Arbitration Courts of Uzbekistan (AACU) and had a discussion with more than 20 representatives of AACU including Makhmudov Khamza Khasanovich, Chairman of AACU and CIETAC Arbitrator, Babakodjayeva Lola Maratovna, Vice Chairman of AACU, and other members of AACU.

Chairman Makhmudov Khamza Khasanovich began his speech by providing an overview of the AACU’s basic situation. AACU had branches in 12 cities across Uzbekistan and had 547 arbitrator members. He then shared Uzbekistan’s relevant laws and practices regarding arbitrator qualifications, the scope of arbitration, and the basic principles of arbitration. He stated that advanced arbitration systems and practices could help parties establish stable expectations and enhance the credibility of arbitration. He hoped to continue strengthening exchanges and cooperation with CIETAC and learn from China’s advanced arbitration experience to promote the development of Uzbekistan’s arbitration legal system.

Vice President Gu Yan expressed his gratitude to Chairman Makhmudov for his warm reception. He introduced the development history of CIETAC, the cases handled by CIETAC, especially those involving Uzbekistan parties, and the recognition and enforcement of CIETAC’s awards globally, and introduced the basic principles in CIETAC arbitration, such as its independence from government, respect for the parties’ autonomy, finality of arbitral awards and the confidentiality. President Gu stated that CIETAC, as the earliest established foreign-related arbitration institution in China, was very willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the arbitration legal community of Uzbekistan and jointly promote the development of the commercial arbitration dispute resolution mechanism. CIETAC looks forward to establishing a cooperative relationship with AACU to jointly promote exchanges between the arbitration legal communities of China and Uzbekistan and provide legal assurance for the high-quality construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Both sides exchanged in-depth views on how to leverage the advantages of arbitration to promote economic and trade development in China-Uzbekistan and Central Asia and reached broad consensus on enhancing mutual understanding, strengthening cooperation, and jointly promoting legal and cultural exchanges between China and Uzbekistan.

After the meeting, Vice President Gu Yan presented the Certificate of Arbitrators to Chairman Makhmudov Khamza Khasanovich.
