On 1 December 2020, China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (“CIETAC”) signed the Strategic Cooperation Agreement (“Agreement”) with Xi'an JiaoTong University (“XJTU”) in Xi'an. Mr. Wang Chengjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of CIETAC, and Mr. Shan Wenhua, Dean of the Law School in XJTU, signed the Agreement on behalf of both sides.

Under the Agreement, CIETAC and XJTU will develop multi-dimensional and integrative strategic cooperation in cultivating talents, scientific research, social service and other aspects. Both sides will jointly explore a new method or approach to incorporate theories with practice, conduct research on major issues in international investment arbitration and international commercial arbitration areas, thereby promoting China’s arbitration course.

Before the signing ceremony, Secretary-General Wang and CIETAC delegates visited the Research Institute of Law in XJTU and had a symposium with the Institute about the Agreement and relevant issues. The two sides reviewed the history of cooperation when XJTU and CIETAC made the Rule of International Investment Dispute, initiated the China Permanent Forum for International Investment Arbitration, and organized the first CIETAC Cup International Investment Arbitration Competition. Secretary-General Wang expressed gratitude towards XJTU for its strong support of the CIETAC Silk Road Arbitration Center and hoped both sides to keep fulfilling the spirit of “Westward,” which was “Broad-Minded, Selfless Dedication, Promoting Tradition and Hard Working.” To achieve these targets, CIETAC and XJTU will strengthen cooperation and jointly promote the international development of arbitration in China.

Also, CIETAC and XJTU discussed and planned how to implement the Agreement so as to serve the construction of Belt and Road, take a foothold in China to see the world, and continuingly raise China’s voice in the field of international dispute resolution.
